Woking YMCA
Spring 2006 should see the opening of a dynamic and exciting new Christian venture in Woking. At the moment part of Hollywood House in Chobham Road is undergoing a dramatic transformation from a night club into a state-of-the-art YMCA youth development centre, complete with music facilities including its own recording studio, and sports facilities such as 5 aside football and badminton. Additionally it will provide a drop-in centre and internet/IT access, all within a safe environment, free from drugs and alcohol. Staff will be on hand to give advice and help to those who need it.
What makes this such a special project is its Christian foundation. The YMCA is a leading Christian charity which was founded 160 years ago. It provides support and assistance for young people in many areas of their lives. The YMCA is still the largest voluntary sector provider of safe supported accommodation in England for single men and women between the ages of 16 and 35.
It is envisaged that the centre in Woking will play host to Alpha courses, and links will be forged with local churches so that any who come to Christ through the work of the YMCA can be integrated into the local church family. The YMCA facility is to complement other Christian youth work in Woking, not replace it.
The capital for the project has for the most part been covered by the council, which, realising the need for more youth provision in the town, has injected £700,000 towards the set up costs. There is however a need for more funding, and this will be ongoing. If you feel that you can support the work of the Woking YMCA, either as a volunteer or financially, either Terry Eckersley (C.E.O.) or Simon Bellord (Fundraising and Standards Executive) would like to hear from you. They are at Woking YMCA, 4th Floor Crown House, 1 Crown Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 6HR. Tel. 01483 710588.
